How does the payslip checker work?
It works out what your income tax, National Insurance and student loan should be for one pay period, assuming your pay is the same every period this tax year, then compares that with your payslip. Differences of up to £1 (£2 for net pay) are normal because payroll uses tax tables and rounding.
Why might my payslip be different?
Common reasons: a different tax code (check it in the HMRC app), an emergency code while your pay changes from month to month, starting a job part way through the tax year, a bonus or overtime in this period, tax owed from an earlier year being collected through your code, or a different National Insurance category, for example if you are over State Pension age or a company director.
What should I do if my payslip looks wrong?
Ask your payroll or HR team first, as they can see your full pay history. If your tax code is wrong, update your details in your HMRC online account or the HMRC app. HMRC normally sorts out over- or under-paid tax through your code or after the tax year ends.
