Simple Salary / Student loan repayment calculator
Student loan repayment calculator
How much comes out of your pay for your student loan each month in 2026/27, for every plan. Repayments depend on what you earn, not on how much you owe.
Which student loan plan am I on?
Plan 1: started a course in England or Wales before September 2012, or in Northern Ireland. Plan 2: England or Wales from September 2012 to July 2023. Plan 4: Scotland. Plan 5: England from August 2023. Postgraduate loan: a master's or doctoral loan in England or Wales. Your plan is on your payslip or in your Student Loans Company account.
How much do I repay in 2026/27?
9% of what you earn above your plan's threshold: £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4 and £25,000 for Plan 5. Postgraduate loans are 6% above £21,000, on top of any other plan.
Does the amount I owe change my repayments?
No. Repayments depend only on your earnings. The balance only affects how long you repay for. Any balance left is written off after 25, 30 or 40 years depending on the plan.
Are repayments taken before or after tax?
They are worked out on your gross pay (after any salary sacrifice) and taken from your pay after tax. They do not reduce the income tax you pay.
Rates last checked against gov.uk on 11 October 2026.

Please note
Repayments are worked out on each payslip, so a bonus month can take more. Self-employed repayments are collected through Self Assessment instead.
