My sponsor lost its licence: the 60-day rule

If your employer's sponsor licence is revoked, your sponsorship ends with it. The Home Office then shortens your permission, usually to 60 days, to give you time to find a way to stay. Here is what that period looks like.

What happens

When a licence is revoked the Home Office writes to each sponsored worker to say their permission has been cut short ("curtailed"). The new expiry date is usually 60 days from the date of that letter, or your original expiry date if that comes sooner. The clock runs from the date the Home Office sends the decision, not from your last day at work, and the letter may arrive by email or in your UKVI account.

Your options in the 60 days

Applying for a new visa before your permission expires keeps you lawfully in the UK while the application is decided.

Suspension is different

If the licence is only suspended, your permission is not cut short. The sponsor is removed from the public register while the Home Office investigates and cannot sponsor anyone new, but existing workers keep their visas. If the investigation ends in revocation, the 60-day letter follows then.

Get advice early

Sixty days goes quickly. Speak to a regulated immigration adviser as soon as you receive the letter; some charities and law centres advise for free. Find a regulated adviser on gov.uk.
